Centre for Media and Information Literacy and Climate Change Action is an organization established to solve pressing issues concerning national and international communities in line with the United Nation’s mission to foster equal rights, inclusive education, innovation, mitigate climate change, curving misinformation, addressing the digital disparities and to provide leadership training to young people, parastatals, agencies, and communities.

Our Mission

The mission of CEMILCCA is to build and maintain credibility as a highly professional organization that advances multidisciplinary research, fosters capacity building, and actively engages with diverse communities to promote media and information literacy alongside climate change awareness and action. Through rigorous scholarship, transparent governance, and strategic partnerships, CEMILCCA committed to delivering impactful programs and publishing authoritative research, including the bi-annual International Journal for Media and Information Literacy and Environmental Sustainability (IJMILES), thereby contributing meaningfully to academic discourse and practical solutions to the national and global issues.

Who We Are

The Centre for Media and Information Literacy and Climate Change Action (CEMILCCA) was established as an innovative organization dedicated at promoting media and information literacy and ensuring climate change action among youth and vulnerable population. The centre operates with the belief that media and information literacy (MIL) can significantly contribute to encourage people to become well informed and empowered generation that can be able to solve critical issues like environmental sustainability and climate change. 

CEMILCCA's mission is to create awareness about the role of media in addressing climate challenges and equip young people with the necessary skills and knowledge they need in order to use media platforms responsibly through critical thinking where they can promote sustainable practices. The centre works on various programs and initiatives, such as climate change education campaign, organizing workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns, community dialogue advocacy, empowerment for girls, conducting research as well as collaboration with environmental and educational organizations to enhance the global action to climate change.

 Through its activities, CEMILCCA empowers students to actively engage in climate action by leveraging media as a tool for advocacy and change, which will help in a way that they become prepared to address environmental challenges as future leaders in the community, media, policy making and environmental sectors. 

Our Mandate

  1. Enhancement of Media and Information Literacy among the populace: CEMILCCA aims to empower individuals and communities by increasing their capacity to critically analyze, evaluate, and utilize media and information sources. This objective supports decision-making and active citizenship in today’s information age.
  2. Advancement of Climate Change Awareness, and Action : The organization seeks to promote public understanding of climate science, policy, and sustainable practices. Through education, advocacy, and participatory initiatives, CEMILCCA strives to catalyze proactive responses to environmental challenges at local, national, and international levels.
  3. Promotion of High-Quality Academic and Professional Research: One of the top priorities to CEMILCCA’s work is the chairing of the International Journal for Media and Information Literacy and Environmental Sustainability (IJMILES), which publishes multidisciplinary research bi-annually. This aims to foster scholarly excellent research and facilitate knowledge exchange on media ethics, environmental sustainability, and related fields.
  4. Advancing Climate and Media Policies: The Centre operates to provide policy and analysis in the relevant fields, in which that can help in promotion and development of  the guiding principles regarding media, information and climate change.
  5. Support Vulnerable Populations: Provide relevant resources and training for vulnerable children and girls, in order to ensure their active participation in climate action efforts. Address barriers to education and information access, particularly in underserved communities.
  6. Promotes Leadership and Capacity Building: Develop leadership programs that empower young people to have capacity for climate action and media advocacy. Encourage youth-led projects that utilize media to raise awareness and propose innovative solutions for climate challenges.
  7. Advocacy for Sustainable Environmental and Social Practices: CEMILCCA actively supports initiatives that encourage sustainable development, equity, and resilience within communities. This commitment aligns with international sustainability frameworks.

Yahaya Umar Fadawa

Yahaya Umar Fadawa Founder & Executive Director; Yahaya Umar Fadawa is the Founder and Executive Director of CEMILCCA, a revolutionary organization that aims to equip young people and vulnerable communities with knowledge and skills to combat misinformation and solve challenges related to climate change.

He is a visionary leader, MIL and climate advocate.  He is a students representative at the department of Library and Information Science, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.  Among other responsibilities, he was also a Vice President of the National Association of Library and Information Science Students.
Through his exceptional leadership and social responsibility, Umar Fadawa coordinated various activities and execution of tasks for the benefits of youth and students across the levels. He coordinated a team that designed and submitted a UNESCO Global Hackathon Project (MIL Verifier) in 2023 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Morenike Ibidunmoye

Morenike Ibidunmoye Chief Operating Officer; Morenike Ibidunmoye is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at CEMILCCA where she plays an important role in overseeing CEMILCCA’s daily operations, focusing on efficiency, compliance, and productivity.

She is an experienced healthcare professional with extensive work experience in providing high-quality patient care and leading efficient nursing teams. She is a Senior Nursing Sister/Nurse Manager – Outpatient/Accident & Emergency at the  St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, where she manages the entire hospital’s staffing schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage and efficient utilization of nursing resources .

Mrs. Ibidunmoye is highly professional and expert in healthcare management where she monitor and maintain compliance with regulatory standards and guidelines applicable in outpatient/inpatient settings. Also a member of Incident review panel.  Among numerous achievements and awards, she is a recipient of Best Staff Nurse of the Year, St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos (Dec. 2010).

Dr. Aminu Musa Umar

Dr. Aminu Musa Umar Research & Policy Coordinator; Aminu Musa Umar PhD is a Research and Policy Coordinator at CEMILCCA ensures the rigor, relevance, and accessibility of CEMILCCA’s research activities. He oversees the planning, execution, and synthesis of multidisciplinary research projects.

He is a College Librarian at the College of Medical Sciences, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. He served as a Better Evidence Champion. He is a researcher with a specialization in Social Informatics-Information Behavior. He has a special interest in Open Access, Scholarly Communication, Digital Information Resource Management, Institutional Repositories, Digital Archiving, Knowledge Management, Health Informatics, and Research Methodology. 
Dr. Aminu previously worked at Ahmadu Bello University as: an Institutional Digital Repository Manager, Kashim Ibrahim Library’s Head of the Digitization Unit and Head of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division, and documentalist at the Institute for French Research in Africa (IFRA) and Institute for Development Research.

Habiba Muhammad Sani

Habiba Muhammad Sani Program Manager; Habiba Mohammed Sani is the Programs Manager at CEMILCCA, where she coordinates and supervises  various activities and game changing programs. Among numerous awards in the University, she is the recipient of the Best Level Coordinator at the Department of Mass Communication, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
She is an experienced and seasoned lecturer at the department of Mass Communication, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. She is a researcher and students’ trainer with regards to media and environmental sustainability.  She is the winner of TETFUND Institutional Based Research Grant.

Her research focus is on media and its effect on the environment; assessing the power of media in disseminating environment related information. She also do audience assessment to uncover how the recipient of information react to the message, how it’s changing their attitude and practice towards the environment.

International Journal for Media and Information Literacy and Environmental Sustainability (IJMILES)

The International Journal for Media and Information Literacy and Environmental Sustainability (IJMILES) aims to address the intersection of media and information literacy (MIL) and environmental sustainability, which is part of the CEMILCCA’s core mission. The journal will serve as an interdisciplinary platform for academic discourse, policy discussion, and practical innovation. It will ensure the provision of high quality research output and serves as the centre for fact finding evidence to solving the lingering problems with regards to disinformation, misinformation, media and information literacy, climate change and helps to provides solutions with highly supporting evidence and methodologies to governments, academics, societal and industries policy making.
